The Sega Mega Drive/Sega
Genesis is a 16-bit video game console released by Sega in 1988/90 part
of the fourth generation era of consoles. Named Mega Drive in Japan and
Europe and Genesis in North America it was Sega's fifth home console and
the successor to the Sega Master System.
In 1991 Sega re-branded itself with a new game and mascot, Sonic the
Hedgehog marketed as cooler than Mario, Nintendo's mascot. This shift
led to a wider success for the Genesis and would eventually propel Sega
to 65% of the market in North America. Simultaneously Sega
released Sega CD as an add-on feature, allowing for extra storage in
games due to their CD-ROM format and in 1994, Sega released the Sega 32X
in an attempt to upgrade the Mega Drive to the standards of more
advanced systems. With a lifespan of fourteen years and 29 million
units sold, it became Sega's most successful console.
