The six  Australian colonies that formed the Commonwealth of Australia operated their own postal service  issuing their own stamps that continued to be valid until 1966 .  For most, Australian philately proper begins in  1913 with the issue of a red 1d (one penny) Kangaroo and Map keep  38 years, and a king George V.kept for 23 years .Australia's first airmail-designated stamp appeared on 20 May 1929.

Australian definitives featured the monarch, Australian fauna and Australian flora.  With the introduction of decimal currency  24 new definitives were issued.
Since 1971, when the last base domestic letter rate definitive  appeared in 1971, the designs of all Australian definitive values have focused on fauna, flora, reptiles, butterflies, marine life, gemstones, paintings and  handicrafts. From 1980, a stamp has been issued annually to commemorate the monarch's birthday.

Australia's first commemorative stamp was issued on 9 May 1927 to mark the opening of the first Parliament House in Canberra. Subsequently, issues have appeared regularly commemorating Australian achievements and landmarks in Australian history. There have been many special issues. such as Christmas stamps, special issues for the Collecting month stamps and , after the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games stamps featuring Australians who have won an Olympic gold medal .

Self-adhesive stamps were first issued in 1990. and , after1997, an annual Australian Legends issue has commemorated living important Australians .In 2001 separate stamps were introduced for domestic and international postage .

From the 1913 to 1930, Commonwealth and State Government agencies used stamps punctured with OS (“Official Stamp”). Australia has had joint stamp issues with New Zealand , the United Kingdom , some of its external territories, the United States of America , the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics , People’s Republic of China , Indonesia , Singapore , Greece , Hong Kong, Sweden , France  and Thailand .

The stamps of some Australian external territories such as the Australian Antarctic Territory Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island have always been valid for postage within Australia
