Sweden is a Nordic country on the Scandinavian Peninsula in
Northern Europe. Its capital and largest city is Stockholm. . Posten,
the Swedish mail service, was established in 1636 by
Axel Oxenstierna, and
Sweden issued its first postage
stamps in 1855, a set of five values denominated in skilling
banco inscribed "SVERIGE", as have been all subsequent Swedish stamps.
A new design that included a reclining lion appeared in 1862, The numeral issue
included Sweden's first bi-colored stamp and continued in use for nearly
twenty years
The monarch made a first appearance on stamps in 1885,
In 1891 a new definitive series featured bi-colored numerals for low
values and a profile of Oscar II. On 26 October 1903, Sweden's first
commemorative stamp came out,.
A new series of 1910 used an arms design for low values, and a full-face
portrait of King Gustav V. 1920 saw the introduction of coil
stamps using a lion design and a new portrait of Gustav, along with a
crown .
During the 1920s, the definitives were gradually supplanted by a
new series with a 3/4 profile of Gustav. In 1924, the Universal Postal
Union celebrated its 50th anniversary and its Congress was held in
Stockholm, so Sweden issued two series marking it,
followed by a commemorative set in 1936 marking the 300th anniversary of
the postal service .
In 1939 a new series used a profile of Gustav for lower values, and the
Three Crowns for higher was issued continuing to beb used into the
1960s.
The definitives of 1967 encompassed a wide variety of
subjects, including wildlife, scenery, daily life, history, and legend,
each realized in radically different styles.
The Åland Islands form an archipelago in the Baltic Sea forming an
autonomous, demilitarized, Swedish-speaking administrative
province, region and historical province of Finland. It is the smallest
province of Finland.
The islands consist of the main island Fasta Åland and an archipelago to the east that consists of
over 6,500 skerries and islands. In the east, the Åland archipelago is contiguous with
the Finnish Archipelago Sea. .
Due to Åland's autonomous status, the powers exercised at the provincial
level are largely exercised by the Government of Åland in Åland.
