The Republic of Rwanda is a small landlocked country
in the Great Lakes region of east-central Africa -- a verdant country of
fertile and hilly terrain. Home to approximately 10.1 million people,
Rwanda supports the densest population in continental Africa, with most
of the population engaged in subsistence agriculture..The country has
garnered international attention for the infamous Rwandan Genocide
of 1994.
Ruanda-Urundi was a Belgian suzerainty from 1916 to 1924, a League of
Nations Class B Mandate from 1924 to 1945 and then a UN trust territory
until 1962, when it became the independent states of Rwanda and Burundi.
