Burkina Faso is a nation in West Africa.
It's capital is Ouagadougou. After gaining independence from
France in 1960, the country underwent many governmental changes until
arriving at its current form, a semi-presidential republic.
The Republic of Upper Volta -- with the name indicating that the country
contains the upper part of the three parts Volta River called the
Black Volta, White Volta and Red Volta -- was
established in 1958, as a self-governing colony within the
French Community. Before attaining autonomy it had been French Upper
Volta and part of the French Union. On August 5, 1960 it attained full
independence from France.
