A role-playing game (RPG)  -- a form of interactive and collaborative storytelling -- is a type of game in which players assume the roles of characters and collaboratively create narratives  according to a predetermined system of rules and guidelines,  When players do perform their characters' physical actions is known as live-action roleplaying games (LARP).

Video games incorporating settings and game mechanics found in role-playing games are referred to as computer role-playing games, or CRPGs. while traditional non-digital are being referred to as "pen and paper" or "tabletop" role-playing games.

Card wargaming
A relatively recent trend is card-driven games such as: Nuclear War, Naval War , Armor Supremacy. and Up Front,  that have events outside the area of the map or  outside the straightforward scope of the game play.

Rulebook: Rules vary in complexity and depth  Scenarios wary from a single conflict, with only one starting point. More flexible systems use a separate scenario book, or cards, that define separate scenarios for the game, increasing replay value.
