In the sixties the Bank of Western Samoa introduced 1, 2 and 10 tala banknotes. followed by 5 tala and. In the eightiesby 20 tala notes Later the Central Bank of Samoa issued its first notes for 2, 5, 10 , 20 tala, , 50 and 100 tala notes  Polymer 2 tala notes were also introduced and New, paper notes for 5 to 100 tala were introduced in late 2005


In the sixties ½, 1, 2, 5 and 10 Papanga banknotes (bearing the portrait of Queen Salote Tupou III and  King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV) were issued followed by  20 and 50 pa anga 
The obverse of the notes  features text in the Tongan language and shows the portrait of King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV. The reverse is in English language and shows typical motives and landmarks of Tonga:
