The lira was the currency of Malta until it was replaced by th euro in 2008.
Before 1972, the pound circulated, composed of British coins and
banknotes supplemented by Maltese notes. The name "lira" was used
on banknotes beginning in 1973, denominated in liri on the obverse
and pounds on the reverse, in denominations of 1, 5 and 10 and 20 liri. Four series had been issuing, designated the second to
the fifth series by the Central Bank, with the first series in the
pound.
The pound is the currency of Gibraltar. It is exchangeable with the UK
pound sterling at par value. Since 1995, the paper money issued by the
Government of Gibraltar has been denominated in "pounds sterling".
In 1898, the British pound was made sole legal tender. Since 1927,
Gibraltar has issued its own banknotes..In 1914, the government introduced notes of 2 and 10
shillings, 1, 5 and 50 pounds. folowed by a new series of notes in 1927. In 1975, 10 and 20 pound notes were introduced, followed
by 50 pounds in 1986. . In
1995, a new series of notes was issued which, for the first time,
gave the denominations in "pounds sterling" rather than just "pounds". |
