The peso is the currency of Mexico. The name peso originally used in reference to pesos oro
or pesos plata also means "weight" in Spanish.
The first banknotes issued by the Mexican state were produced by
Emperor Iturbide in denominations of 1, 2 and 10 pesos. Similar issues
were made by the republican government and Ten-peso
notes were also issued by Emperor Maximilian. Until the
twenties banknotes were issued by private banks
and local authorities. |
