PC Card was originally designed for computer memory expansion, but the existence
of a usable general standard for notebook peripherals led to many kinds of
devices being made available in this form. Typical devices included network
cards, modems, and hard disks.
NMIC
A network monitoring interface card is similar to a
network card (NIC). bgut, unlike a standard network card, is designed
to passively listen on a network. An NMIC
may differ from a NIC, in that the NMIC may not have a MAC Address, may lack the
ability to transmit and may not announce its presence on a network. Advanced
Network Monitoring Interface Cards have features that include an ability to
offload CPU intensive processing from a system's CPU, accurate time measurement,
traffic filtering, and an ability to perform other application specific
processing.
WNIC
A wireless network interface controller is a network card which connects
to a radio-based computer network, unlike a regular network interface controller
(NIC) which connects to a wire-based network WNIC
is an essential component for wireless desktop computer. This card uses an
antenna to communicate through microwaves. In a desktop computer usually is
connected using the PCI bus. Other connectivity options are USB and PC card.
Integrated WNIC's are also available.
