The Laserdisc (LD) is an obsolete home video disc format, the forerunner to  Compact Discs and DVDs.  and was the first commercial optical disc storage medium. It never obtained more than a niche market with videophiles in America andit remained largely an obscure format in Europe. The technology and concepts proved with the Laserdisc would be later developed into dvds.

Laserdisc (LD) was the first commercial optical disc storage medium, and was used primarily for movies for home viewing.

During its development, MCA, which owned the technology, referred to it as the Reflective Optical Videodisc System; changing the name  to Disco-Vision and then  to DiscoVision .

Pioneer Electronics  manufactured players and printed discs under the name Laser Videodisc. For 1980 the name was compressed into LaserDisc and in 1981"Laserdisc" became the final and common name for the format,
