In 1910, two friends, Bernard E. Fleischaker and Hugo Baum, formed a company to sell toys. Doll-making was then but a fledgling industry in the United States and when the two businessmen made the momentous decision to manufacture their own dolls, they combined the first initial of each of their names...and Effanbee was born.

Effanbee has enjoyed many famous "first" and created dolls whose names still bring a
tinge of emotion to doll lovers of all generations. One of their most sought after early dolls was the petulant-looking Baby Grumpy and when in 1915, it was made available in both African American and white versions, Effanbee became the first company to nationally distribute an African American doll.

In 1927, a doll was released that, perhaps more than any other came to represent the
name Effanbee - Patsy. Patsy was the first doll to closely resemble a real child...the first
to be given additional clothes and accessories... and the first to be given a family of companion dolls. Another innovation came in 1934 when DyDee, the first drink-and-wet doll, was born.

Effanbee is now owned by the Robert Toner Company but you can still find the great
dolls which have made this company great for so many years.
