The term handicraft is usually distinguished from the term arts and crafts
becouse handicrafted items are
intended
to be used products for a purpose beyond simple decoration and are generally considered more traditional work,
created as a necessary part of daily life, while arts and crafts implies
more of a artistinc and hobby pursuit and a demonstration of a creative
technique.
Rural crafts
are diofferent from the "rustic"
handicraft goods often seen in rural gift shops.
A wide variety of joinery construction in wood was also practiced, from
tool-making through gate-making and wheel-making, to full-scale barn
building. Some add skills such as beekeeping and path laying to the list of
rural crafts. In coastal areas, there are additional crafts associated with
the sea; such as net making for fishing, and small boat making.
Rural crafts will tend to vary in their styles from place to place, and will
thus often contribute strongly to a sense of place.
