The term "graphic novel" was first coined  in 1964, mainly  to distinguish the newly translated works from Europe  from what was perceived as the more juvenile subject matter that was published in the United States.
Graphic novels  are books, typically squarebound and published with a card cover, containing no advertswhen a publisher collecting  previously serialised stories,

They generally collect a single story, which has been broken into a number of chapters previously serialised in comic books, with the issues collectively known as a story arc.
In the United States, when a publisher collects previously serialised stories, such a collection is commonly referred to as either a trade paperback or as a graphic novel.

The current usage of the term graphic novel implies a difference from that of a comic book in that most graphic novels reflect a more sophisticated level of artistry, storyline, or completeness, that run through a complete story arc from beginning to end, unlike many compilation books, which are simple collections of a comic series.

Newspaper strips also get collected, both in Europe and in the United States, and these are sometimes
also referred to as graphic novels.
