The telephone is
a telecommunications device that is used to transmit and receive sound .
Early telephones some used a liquid transmitter, some
had a metal diaphragm that induced current in an electromagnet wound around a
permanent magnet, and some were "dynamic" - their diaphragm vibrated a coil of
wire in the field of a permanent magnet or the coil vibrated the diaphragm. .
Most, however, used the Edison/Berliner carbon transmitte that kept the Bell monopoly viable into
the 20th century, when the network become more important than the
instrument.
The most popular style of
telephone was introduced in the early 20th century combining a carbon granule transmitter and electromagnetic receiver in a
single molded plastic handle, which sat in a cradle in the base
unit.
After the 1930s, the base also enclosed the bell and induction coil, obviating
the old separate bell box. and power was supplied by central
office batteries.
For the next half century, the telephone network became
larger and much more efficient, but after the dial was added the change was little until touch tone
was introduced.
In the late 1960s, the U.S.
long-distance telephone network began to convert to a digital network, employing
digital radios for many of its links.
