Decimal coinage was introduced in 1972 in denominations of 2, 3 and 5 mils,
1, 2, 5, 10 and 50 cents. Malta introduced the 1, 2, 3,
and 5 mils coins to allow goods to be priced for any number of
mils. Followed by a 25 cents coin . Then a new coinage was issued in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50
cents and 1 lira. A third series was introduced in 1991 due to the change in
Malta's coat of arms. Coins are currently in circulation and are being withdrawn
with the introduction of the euro.
