gold, silver and Bronze and
are divided into three periods, the
Archaic, the Classical and the Hellenistic.The Archaic period extends from the introduction of coinage until the Persian Wars The
Classical period that lasted until the conquests of Alexander the
Great, which began the Hellenistic period, extending until
the Roman absorption of the Greek world in the 1st century BCE. The Greeks
cities continued to produce their own coins for several more centuries under
Roman rule, called Roman provincial coins.Even

The first issue of modern Greek coins consisted of holed, aluminium 5, 10 and 20 lepta,
cupro-nickel 50 lepta, 1, 2, 5 and 10 drachmae and silver 20 drachmae
pieces. In mthe seventies unholed, aluminium
10 and 20 lepta, nickel-brass 50 lepta, 1 and 2 drachmae and cupro-nickel 20
drachmae were issued followed by Cupro-nickel 50 drachmae and nickel-brass 50 drachmas coins
, copper 1 and 2 drachmas and nickel-brass 20 and 100
drachmas . In 2000 a set of 6 Olympic games themed 500 drachmas coins
was issued.
Coins in circulation at the time of the adoption of the euro were 1
, 2 ,5 ,10 ,20 ,50 ,100 and 500 drachmas .
