Brunei's first coins were struck in a tin-lead alloy The earliest types with a
flowery design. These were followed by issues of sultans. Finally, coins bearing
the names of known Sultans were issued.
The first pitis issued in Brunei with a definite date was that issued by
Sultan Abdul Momin, who ruled from 1853 to 1885.in two denominations - ½ and 1
pitis .The last Sultan to issue his own coin was Sultan Hashim who issued the
"star coin" in 1886
The Coins of the Brunei dollar have changed through time along with Brunei
itself.
1, 5, 10, 20, and 50 sen were the first coins issued of the Brunei
dollar (or ringgit Brunei in Malay), wich was divided into 100 cents
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah acceded to the throne upon the abdication of his father
in late 1967.Commemorative coins of $1 through to $1,000 were struck
in this period the same denominations as the 1967 coinage were retained
later the title of the Sultan was changed to SULTAN HASSANAL BOLKIAH when Brunei
became a fully independent member of the Commonwealth of Nations .Later a
new portrait depicting the Sultan was adopted and the title of the Sultan is now
given as SULTAN HAJI HASSANAL BOLKIAH
