The South African pound. Prior to the Union of 1910 when each uthority issued their own pounds, After the Union circulating coins were mostly British, but the coins of Paul Kruger's Republic remained in circulation. In 1923, South Africa began to issue its own coins the same as in Great Britain:.

South Africa decimal currency was introduced in February, 1961.and they are classified as belonging under the First Republic that came into effect on 31 May 1961 and withdrew from the Commonwealth. with the following initial coinage . 1/2 cent , 1 cent , 2 1/2 cents , 5 cents  , 10 cents , 20 cents , 50 cents , all except the 1/2 and 1 cent coins issued in silver
A revised series was introduced for 1965.including 1/2, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents with silver  replaced  by cupronickel. A silver R1 coin was introduced, whilst gold R1 and R2 pieces were also minted for collectors.   The coinage followed the denominations of the 1965-69 series, with the South African coat of arms displayed.   The Second Republic was born in 1984 with
Second Republic second coinage (1989/90–93), Followed by the third Republic first coinage (1994–95) ,the third Republic second and third coinage (2000 onwards)
