In the eighteen century coins for 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 cents were introduced in copper and the higher two in silver. Coin production ceased in 1899 and did not restart until the nineteen century, with silver coins not produced again until 1934, when ¼, ½ and 1 rupee coins were introduced. In the forties, cupro-nickel 10 cents were issued  replacing silver .

In the eighties, a new series of coins was introduced which did not feature the portrait of the monarch but that of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. This coinage consisted of copper-plated-steel 1 and 5 cents, nickel-plated-steel 20 cents and ½ rupee, and cupro-nickel 1 and 5 rupees. Cupro-nickel 10 rupees were introduced in the nineties. last yers a bi-metallic 20-rupee coin was issued for the 40th anniversary of the Bank of Mauritius.
