The kwanza was introduced following Angolan independence. It replaced the escudo
and was subdivided into 100 lwei.
The first coins issued all bore
the date of independence. They were in denominations of 10,
20, 50 lwei, 1, 2, 5 and 10 kwanzas. 20 kwanzas coins were added in the
seventies
Malawi Coins were introduced in 1971 in
denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 tambala. The 1 and 2 tambala were struck in
bronze, the others in cupro-nickel. In the eighties, cupro-nickel 50 tambala and
nickel-brass 1 kwacha coins were added followed by. Bimetallic 5 and 10 kwacha coins . All currently
circulating.
