Coins
In the eighteen century holed, copper coins were introduced in denominations of 1, 2, 5 and 10
centimes, together with silver coins worth 50 centimes, and 1, 2, and 5 francs. Holed, cupro-nickel 5-, 10- and
20-centime coins were introduced in 1906, with the remaining copper coins minted until 1919.
followed by Cupro-nickel 50-centime and 1-franc coins .
The coinage of Belgian Congo ceased in 1929, but resumed in the thirties
for the issue of nickel-bronze 5-franc coins. In the forties, hexagonal, brass
2-franc coins were introduced, followed by round, brass coins worth 1, 2 and 5
francs, and silver 50-franc coins.
In the fifties, brass 5-franc coins were issued carrying the name "Ruanda-Urundi" . Aluminium coins worth 50 centimes, 1 and 5 francs followed
. In the sixties franc-denominated coins of the first Democratic Republic of
Congo were issued one with French legends, the other with Dutch legends.

In the sixties 1 and 10 francs in cupronickel and the 5 francs in bronzewere
introduced. In 1969, aluminium 1 franc coins were
introduced, followed in 1970 by ½ and 2 francs . A reduced
sized 10 franc coin was issued in the seventies Brass 20 and 50 francs
were introduced in 1977. New coins were issued in 2004 for
1 franc - 98% Aluminium, 2% Magnesium ,5 francs - Bronze ,
10 francs - Bronze ,
20 francs - Nickel-plated steel
50 francs - Nickel-plated steel .
